Activity for the classroom: Democracy when?

An activity for KS3

Ask pupils to look at the table of women's suffrage below.

Some issues to discuss with them: Does anything surprise them? (Eg Switzerland's date; the fact that women in some Southern (`developing') countries got the vote earlier than in some European ones). Is a country only democratic when men and women both have the vote? Should children be able to vote? This last point could be the basis for a class debate or for written work.
