Example activity on Listening

Three tokens activity KS2

In a large group discussion each person is given three tokens (match sticks, beans etc). Each time they speak they "spend" one token. When they have used all their tokens they have none left to spend; they cannot speak and need simply to listen.

Comment: the tokens represent both the right to speak and also the responsibility to speak. Some people will pause, think and weigh up the value of speaking if they know that these opportunities to speak are limited to three. Others who might have remained silent throughout have a tangible reminder in their hand that they, like everyone else, have things to contribute.
