Games We Play: the background

The Games We Play project was developed by DEP, based on original inspiration and input from Southern Voices. A pilot project was carried out in 2002 by DEP, Southern Voices, Manchester Healthy Schools and Chapel Street Primary School (see the online case study). The project was then further developed and carried out in four further primary schools in the Manchester area in 2004. In this phase, two of the schools were linked, bringing together pupils from schools with a very different cultural mix.

The project arose from DEP's continued commitment to promoting intercultural understanding and appreciation of diversity in schools and the wider community. It also reflects the need to encourage children to appreciate and value their roots and traditions, and to see their elders as a valuable resource and source of inspiration. In addition, the project is a response to mounting concern about children's inactivity and safety fears some parents have about children playing in outdoor spaces.
