Edition4: Sharing our Space - the future for people and wild animals

As humans have increased in number and have taken over large areas of the globe, so they have threatened the future of many animals and plants. In Britain and other Northern countries, development has already wiped out much of our wildlife. We are currently putting our fish stocks at risk and destroying many habitats for birds and other forms of fauna and flora. Globally, population pressures are leading to many forest areas being cleared to grow food or graze cattle.
Quotes from people from the 'developing' world

"The survival of our wildlife is a matter of grave concern to all of us in Africa. These wild creatures and wild places they inhabit are not only important as a source of wonder and inspiration, but are an integral part of our natural resources and our future livelihood and well-being."

Julius Nyerere,
ex-president of Tanzania (East Africa).

"It is not fair for countries whose only elephants are found in Zoos to tell us how to manage our wildlife."

Ms. Tawengwa
'Campfire' warden in Zimbabwe (Southern Africa).

"These Game Parks were created for white men, who can still hunt in the parks, and do whatever they want. We didn't even know the parks existed until the authorities started sending us to prison for hunting."

Cattle herdsman
Cameroon (West Africa).

"The adverse effects on the Earth's biodiversity are increasing dramatically and we are threatening the very foundation of sustainable development."

Reuben Olembo,
Deputy Executive of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
