Project Summary
"The Global Dimension is about having a global perspective in education.
It is strongly linked to Global Citizenship, our role within society and
the wider world. The Global Dimension in Education is about enabling people
to critically engage in local and global issues, to actively participate
and make informed and ethical choices in an increasingly global society.
It is about seeing ourselves as global citizens."

Project Summary
DEP is working on a Global
Dimension* in Initial Teacher Education and Training project funded for
three years by DfID Development
Awareness Fund from 2003-2006. The DEP is working in with the Institute
of Education (IoE) at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).
Goal
To enable and enhance the ability of teachers to address the global dimension
in the classroom.
Aim
To reshape and develop the ITET courses at MMU and build capacity to deliver
Continuing Professional Development courses and INSETS in the region.
Key features
Trying to assess staff and student skills, attitudes and values with regard
to the global dimension. This will be building on work pioneered in the
DEP's Learning for Sustainable Cities project.
MMU staff are working with DEP to develop the curriculum and resources,
to embed the global dimension into teaching programmes.
Changes in staff and student skills, values and attitudes will be tracked
over the three years (including the practice of teachers after qualification)
to evaluate the effectiveness of the project.
Objectives
1. Develop skills, values and attitudes so that students can address the
global
dimension
2. Develop skills, values and attitudes so that teacher trainers can
address the
global dimension
3. Enable students to be able to critique, access and use a range of
materials in
delivering the global dimension as part of the National Curriculum
4. Ensure that any changes in legislation and curriculum are reflected
in ITET
5. Development of 'Institute of Education ethos' based on aspects of
the global
dimension.
6. Application of the development principles and processes to other programmes
across the institution
7. Development of the project processes and outcomes regionally, nationally
and
internationally
Getting involved
The DEP and MMU are keen to establish links with local teachers, teacher
mentors and trainers to share ideas or relevant information. We are particularly
interested in enabling teachers to share good practice around Global Dimension*
work in schools. Please contact us to talk more about the project or to
arrange to come in to visit our resource centre.
We are also keen to share experiences and ideas with others involved
in ITET and CPD work around Global Dimension issues regionally, nationally
and internationally.
