Introduction
The Local Education Networks of Schools (LENS) project is being run by DEP on behalf of the North West Global Education Network (NWGEN). The work is funded by the Department for International Development, began in September 2008 and will run until 2013.
Brief overview
The LENS project is working to establish 35 clusters of schools across the north west, including seven clusters within Greater Manchester. The project is focused on encouraging schools to incorporate the global dimension into their teaching.
At the time of writing DEP is working with three active clusters, one involving four clusters in Gorton, East Manchester, one involving eight schools in Bolton. A third cluster of five schools has recently launched in Trafford. Active LENS schools are now beginning to share planning and teaching resources with local schools and more distant clusters.
The focus of the work varies widely across the clusters, from primary literacy and the International Schools Award, to planning elements of an International Baccalaureate curriculum and meeting government targets for Sustainable Schools.
Aims
The LENS project aims to:
- encourage schools to incorporate a global dimension into their teaching
- promote cooperation and information sharing between schools
- enable clusters to be self-sustaining following two years of project support
- assess the effectiveness of cluster working in incorporating the global dimension into schools.
Activities
The LENS project provided planning support, Inset and guidance on incorporating the global dimension.
