Developing Citizenship was a national project set up by Oxfam, UNICEF and Save the Children. Three DECs (development education centres) were selected to participate in the project: Development Education Project (DEP) in Manchester, Cheshire Development Education Centre (CDEC) and Norfolk Education and Action for Development (NEAD). The project was funded by the Department for International Development between June 2002 and June 2005.
Overview
The project worked with 16 secondary schools across the country, of which four were in Greater Manchester. DEP supported the Manchester schools to develop practical ides for integrating global citizenship into classroom activity, school policy and the wider school community.
Aims
The project aimed to:
- develop and test ideas for embedding global citizenship education into the curriculum
- develop whole school approaches to teaching global citizenship
- develop opportunities for pupil participation in school policy and development
- share experiences and ideas between participating schools
Activities
DEP supported the four Manchester schools to organise a range of initiatives and activities, including:
- KS3 units of work focused on global citizenshipGlobal Days / Earth Summits – whole year group events for pupils to explore a range of global issues, such as climate change and global trade
- themed weeks such as Human Rights Week with exhibitions and classroom activities
- establishing / revitalising school councils to give pupils an active voice within the school community
- fair trade pupil groups operating fair trade stalls and information campaigns
- visual art activities such as producing school murals
