Methodologies

The following methodologies have been used in the LfSC project:

Concept maps
These try to test what pupils know (without a lot of writing) and look at relationships between issues. They can be done before and after a topic or concept is taught. >>

Mental maps
Mental maps give you an idea (like a brainstorm, but with images) of what learners already know or think they know. When you have studied a topic (e.g. Africa) you could ask them to do another mental map and compare the before and after maps. Find out more about mental map methodologies>>

Circle time
This method develops speaking and listening skills, self-esteem and group understanding and get everyone to have a say. Participants can really learn from each other and develop a sense of mutual support and group cohesion. It needs to be practised and then done regularly. >>

Value lines / Four corners
This method gets pupils to stand up for what they believe in, literally, in an active way. >>

Guided visioning
This gets pupils to use their imaginations in as free a way as possible and envision ideal scenarios.>>

Peer education
Here are some resources to help you use peer education methodologies >>

PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) style techniques
Participatory Rural Appraisal (now often called Participatory Learning Appraisal) was developed by people working with rural communities who were concerned about imposing their ideas and agenda. The idea is that you all work together to decide key questions and issues and develop methods for solutions. It is based on the idea of teacher as co-learner and not always the expert. >>

Role play / Social drama
Find out about some useful resources for those interested in using role play and social drama methodologies.

Development Compass Rose This is a way of looking at images and issues using a compass model: N = Natural; E = Economic; S = Social; W = Who decides (Political / Power). It enables users to realise there are several sides / dimensions to issues.
