"The project has helped us to expand and enrich our ESDteaching beyond all our expectations. It has introduced an international / global dimension and helped us to deepen our understanding of many sustainability issues. The whole school has become aware and active in the field of sustainability and an example of good practice for other schools. It is also a project with no end - we can take it forward in many exciting ways."

Whole School Activities

This section contains whole school activities for staff INSET to enable schools to develop ways in which to take on board the Education for Sustainable Development Agenda.

Education for Sustainable Development is an all embracing concept that needs to take learning beyond the classroom to influence the ethos of the school, the way the institution is run and the effects on the community beyond the school gate both locally and globally. Too often ESD initiatives rely on one or two committed champions who may find themelves overloaded in trying to change the course of a largely 'unsustainable' institution.

There are many entry points to the ESD agenda and sometimes extra curricular activity may prove the starting point for an ESD journey, as a number of LFSC schools have demonstrated in our case studies.

The Whole school activities are aimed at promoting whole school awareness and involvement in ESD. As has been stressed in this pack, ESD is a journey. It is an ongoing process of personal and professional development and dialogue with other educators
